(IN OTHER WORDS: DON’T BE COMING IN TELLING US WHAT COLOR YOUR SOFA IS.) WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD OF CREATING BEAUTIFUL, TASTEFUL FRAMES THAT WILL NOT LOOK DATED OR OVERLY TRENDY A FEW YEARS LATER. OUR AIM IS TIMELESSNESS AND SUBTLETY SO THAT THE ARTWORK WILL BE THE FOCAL POINT, AND THE FRAME ACTS ALWAYS AS AN ENHANCEMENT RATHER THAN A DISTRACTION. WE OFFER A LARGE SELECTION OF MOULDINGS WHICH COVER THE GAMUT FROM CONTEMPORARY TO TRADITIONAL AND STREAMLINED TO ORNATE. This abstract mixed media on paper was double matted and framed in a champagne colored moulding that walks the line between traditional and modern.
This old academy figure study in graphite on laid paper was given a simple treatment using an 8-ply mat and a matte finish, duck egg blue narrow frame.
This little oil painting on wood after Gaugin was mounted on a burnt sienna silk mat. The deep frame allows the painting to be recessed, giving it a shadowbox quality even though there is no glass.
Often people feel compelled to frame children’s art in brightly colored frames. We think sometime’s a child’s work can be seen in a different light if it’s not given a juvenile frame treatment. This one reminded us of Andy Warhol’s butterfly illustrations!
This Pierre Bonnard etching was framed in a burled wood frame and a mat that matches the paper. We opted for an old fashioned mode of hanging, rather than the usual hidden wire, using a copper colored grosgrain ribbon. (Depending on the weight of the piece a wire can be hidden behind the ribbon for support.)
This large monochromatic oil on canvas was given a richer look by using a deep and wide traditional black moulding with dark gold detailing.
This spare contemporary nude was given a hefty two-tone frame in a traditional profile but with a more edgy finish. Since the drawing is so minimalist, the busier frame doesn’t compete.
This thickly painted Russian expressionist landscape could stand up to the heavy ornate frame we chose. We used a neutral linen liner to give it a little breathing room.
We let the subject of these photographs dictate the vibe of the frame job. How could it not be pink and gold?
Sometimes less IS more. These exquisitely detailed etchings were given a weighted mat and a matte black 3/4” square moulding. It’s one of the least expensive options we have, but it was perfect. Especially for a grouping.
For this antique Dutch landscape a Florentine style painted finish frame was chosen.
This very modern mixed media on handmade paper was floated on top of a tan linen mat so it’s dimension can be appreciated. The waxed dark stain on the frame mimics the background of the artwork.
This is one of a series of of ink wash sketches depicting ladies dancing. We thought the curvy shapes on the frame echoed the movement in the image. The paper in the different pieces had faded to slightly different colors, so we chose a cream colored mat that worked with all of them.
This sweet 8x10 landscape by an unknown artist was given the sense of an important piece with this more elaborate frame.
We could have gone in a really different direction with this abstract watercolor of the Place de Vosges. But this waxed wood frame looks so sophisticated, and the gold detail picks up the pattern of the repeated arches in the work.
Sketches and studies need to be treated as such. This unsigned sketch by Elmore Morgan was floated on top of the mat to show where it was torn from his sketchbook. Even though he is an important artist, this sketch did not need to be represented as a finished work, but acknowledged for what it is. Therefore, we chose the informal unfinished maple moulding.
